The explosiveness of advancing climate change is increasing and that is really bad news. Because this knowledge is becoming more and more popular, the pressure to act on politics and business is increasing, and so the European Union and many companies have set themselves the goal of becoming climate neutral. Conceptually, climate neutrality means that carbon sinks (negative emissions) are created to the same extent as emissions are caused. However, the potential for carbon sinks is limited and it will take several years or even decades to develop them. Since the CO2 content in the atmosphere is already too high, it is imperative to achieve climate neutrality to reduce emissions quickly and without compromise. In terms of technology, we have all the solutions in hand to reduce emissions by 90 - 95% in industrialized economic areas within 15-20 years. But emissions reduction alone is no longer sufficient to contain the climate crisis. At the same time as reducing emissions, a start must now be made on expanding and further developing the existing solution options for creating carbon sinks. The order of magnitude is enormous: for the European Union to be climate-neutral, the annual sink volume to be created must increase to at least 850 million t CO2 by 2050. The three solutions afforestation / reforestation, biochar / biomass pyrolysis and the creation of soil organic matter can be implemented in the short and medium term and there is no reason to wait with rapid expansion. What applies to them is that they enable a relevant volume in the short term, that they are cost-efficient, since they have an additional or main benefit in addition to costs, and that if they are implemented well, they do not have negative, but predominantly clearly positive effects on ecosystems.

Climate protection

One of the main approaches to climate protection is, on the one hand, the drastic reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases that are released during energy generation and when energy is consumed in industrial and agricultural production, in transport and in private households. This includes, in particular, the gradual phasing out of the use of fossil fuels in the electricity, heating and transport sectors as well as in industry in order to avoid the associated greenhouse gas emissions. According to climate science expertise, the complete conversion to renewable energies can and must be completed by the middle of the 21st century in order to achieve the limitation of global warming aimed at in the Paris Agreement. Basically, for every limitation of the earth’s temperature to a certain level, the net greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced to zero, since only a limited carbon budget is available for a certain temperature that can be emitted. On the other hand, it is about the conservation and the targeted promotion of those natural components that can absorb and bind carbon dioxide (so-called carbon sinks, especially forests). Climate protection measures of this kind also reduce air pollution and have other positive side effects for the environment and health.

From our point of view, biochar is very important in the fight against negative climate change. Not only that industrial applications can be implemented quickly and inexpensively, but above all because great things can be achieved here with many small units.

Above all, however, it is becoming increasingly clear that, for reasons of climate protection, we cannot do without the production and use of biochar. Due to the already accumulated amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, it is no longer enough to simply emit less CO2. In order to achieve the Paris climate goals and to limit the global temperature rise to well below 2 ° C, we absolutely need the massive and rapid development of carbon sinks, so-called negative emissions, i.e. the separation and storage of carbon from the atmosphere. Biochar is one of the few realistic solution options with relevant potential, which, if used properly, can develop a variety of additional benefits beyond carbon sequestration. The use of biochar has a clear positive effect on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. We want to show that biochar can not only make a significant contribution to reducing climate change, but also to more sustainable agriculture.
